U18’s Cup: Wetherby 0-3 Ilkley Town
The U18s travelled to Wetherby for the cup semi-final. Pitted against the league leaders, the team knew it would be a tough challenge.
After a slow start, Wetherby took control and were the better team for the opening 20 minutes. Ilkley however, eventually found their stride and on 26 minutes, Calum Tong made a strong break only to be brought down in the box. Tom Weir stroked home the resulting penalty. This gave town confidence as they gradually took control of the game.
At half time, the lads were told to be more aggressive and make things happen, which they delivered, looking a much stronger unit in the 2nd half. A super 20 yard strike from Weir on 53 minutes doubled town’s lead, and victory was confirmed on 82 minutes when Dan Pelkowski finished off a quick counter attack. A well deserved 3-0 win with the whole squad making a contribution.
Whilst Weir controlled midfield and scored 2 goals, the man of the match was Ilkley goalkeeper, Jake Wolf. He made a couple of fantastic early saves to keep Wetherby out, and a couple more in the 2nd half when Wetherby were threatening to get back in the game.
Ilkley now play Nidd in the U18 cup final – date and location to be confirmed. In the meantime, town have 2 important league games to play as they chase Wetherby for the championship.
