Beeston See Off Hard Fighting Ilkley

Beeston St Anthony’s ran out 2-1 winners today against visitors Ilkley Town, holding off a second half fight back from the away side.

Matty Moon gave Beeston an early lead on the 6th minute, breaking through the Ilkley defence, his shot from 12 yards took a slight deflection, enough to take it past James Hirst in goal.

James Allan nearly doubled the home sides lead in the 16th minute, his ferocious volley from 16 yards well blocked by Hirst.

Two chances in the 31st minute saw Beeston come close to grabbing a second. First Stevie Crawford saw his shot deflect just wide of the left hand post, followed by a long range header from Allen which struck the crossbar.

Ilkley came very close to drawing level on the 37th minute. Beeston keeper Stevie Kerr completely mishandled a cross into the box. The ball fell perfectly to Adam Fowler, who could only header wide from close range. A look of disbelief on his face from a chance he should have converted.

Beeston doubled their lead on the 53rd minute, a well worked corner routine finding the feet of Lee Turnbull on the edge of the six yard box, who guided it into the bottom corner on the volley, leaving Hirst in goal with no chance.

Ilkley got a goal back in the 61st minute. Danny Chadwick’s free kick into the box beating everyone, floating over the outstretched arms of Kerr and into the net.

Chadwick came close to levelling the match in the 86th minute, his shot taking a double deflection beating the keeper, only to be denied by the post.

Ilkley had a penalty claim in the dying moments of the match for a fowl on Adam Fowler, but the referee wasn’t interested and Beeston would go on to record a 2-1 victory.

Speaking after the match Ilkley Town Assistant Manager Greg Beswick said: “We’ve done really well I think we put in a really good shift there. The lads aren’t really disappointed I think they know they’ve given it everything they could and worked extremely hard.”

“The second goal was a little bit soft from our point of view but we put up a really good fight there in the last 15 minutes.”

“They are a good side they won the league last season a treble actually so we have performed extremely well.”

Speaking about the penalty claim in the closing stages of the match, Beswick said: “In terms of the penalty decision, with how soft the referee has been with some of the decisions in the game he possibly could have given it.”

“He’s decided obviously it’s not so we just have to go with it and really now it’s about moving on to the next game.”
