Gonzalez consolation not enough for Ilkley

On a warm summer’s evening, The Baht’atters succumbed to a 1-5 defeat against NCEL Premier Division side Knaresborough despite a goal from young striker Kevin Gonzalez.

Ilkley got off to the worst possible start when they conceded from the first corner of the game as Phil Milsom beat Ilkley’s keeper to the ball to make the score 0-1 to the visitors.

Shortly afterwards Ilkley had their first shot of the game when Aaron Davis went on a menacing run before going for glory but his attempt at goal is well saved.

There was a brief pause in play when Tom Smith went down clutching his ankle and had to be replaced by Harry Brown.

After about half an hour played the hosts put the ball in the back of the net when the attacking full back got on the end of a cross only for the linesman to call it back for offside.

Shortly after the restart, Knaresborough’s Tom Dugdale makes it 0-2 to the away side. Then Harry Clark got Knaresborough’s second goal within a couple of minutes when he got on the end of a whipped cross before heading it into the top right corner to make it 0-3.

Then there was a great chance for Ilkley to get a goal back when their no 7 drove with the ball before going for goal on the edge of the box, but the Knaresborough keeper parries the ball away.

It was a sign of things to come when Kevin Gonzalez beats the keeper to the ball before tapping it into the open net to get a consolation goal.

But the celebrations were short-lived for Ilkley when Harry Clark went on a great run before playing it to Joe Navier who delivered the goods for Knaresborough to make it 1-4.

James Hampson finally rounds off the victory for the away side when he got the ball at the far post before making it 1-5.

For Ilkley, it will be a game to forget and will be looking to move on quickly and start preparing for their short trip to Otley Town on Saturday as they continue their pre-season schedule.
