Hughes Masterclass Ensures Ilkley Edge Horbury

Two quickfire goals in the second half was enough to give Ilkley the victory as Horbury’s goal proved to be just a consolation, writes Evan Seaman.
The match started brightly when Alfie Heaton’s cross in the 7th minute nearly ended up as a fluke goal, but the ball eventually landed just over the bar.
In the 20th minute George Gomersall had an opportunity to break the deadlock when he took a free kick on the edge of the box, but his shot was parried away by Horbury’s keeper to keep the hosts at bay.
Despite lots of corners and set pieces, neither side could get into their rhythm in the first half and went into the break goalless.
But the game suddenly sprang into life at the start of the second half when Ilkley’s attacking full-back floated in a cross, but Kevin Gonzalez couldn’t quite get his head onto the ball.
The hosts came close to scoring when Hughes played a nice through ball into Gonzalez who went for the toe poke, but his shot hit the post and went wide.
It turned out to be a sign of things to come when Hughes made an inch-perfect tackle before playing it into the path of Gonzalez who delivered the goods and made the score 1-0 to Ilkley.
The home side quickly doubled their lead when Gomersall’s shot fell into the path of Hughes who tapped the ball into an open net to make it 2-0.
Then there was some fantastic play from Gonzalez who tried to curl the ball into the bottom corner, but Horbury’s keeper made an equally good save to keep the score 2-0.
Horbury did manage to halve the deficit when their no 9 got on the end of a free-kick and finished from close-range.
However, Ilkley held on for their third pre-season victory this summer which will undoubtedly be good preparation for the new NWFCL campaign when it kicks off on the 30th July away to AFC Darwen.
