Unbeaten Scholars seal league crown with 2 games to go
Ilkley Town/St Marys Scholars 4-3 Trinity Sixth Form Huddersfield
Ilkley Town/St Mary’s Scholars faced a potential title-deciding clash against the only team still capable of catching them in the league. From the first whistle, it was evident this would be a fierce contest. Trinity Sixth Form started stronger, winning more duels, reacting quicker to second balls, and capitalising on their chances to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
At the break, the Scholars showed their hunger and determination to fight for the league title. They came out in the second half with renewed energy, working tirelessly and displaying immense character. The comeback began almost immediately, as substitute Harry Franks made an instant impact, latching onto a through ball and finishing clinically into the far corner with his first touch of the game. That goal ignited belief across the team. Soon after, Harry Foley rose highest to meet a wayward cross, expertly guiding his header into the net to bring the game level.
With 20 minutes remaining, Joe Cox was brought down in the box, earning a crucial penalty. Under immense pressure, captain Will Loftus (who trains regularly with the first team) stepped up and coolly slotted home the spot-kick to put St Mary’s ahead. Despite a late push from Trinity Huddersfield, the Scholars defended resolutely, with some outstanding saves securing a thrilling 4-3 victory. This win crowned them league champions for the second consecutive year—with two games still to play.
Not only have they remained unbeaten, but they have also won every league match so far, demonstrating their quality week after week. Their performances have not gone unnoticed, as several Scholars are now playing regularly for Ilkley Town’s senior teams—gaining invaluable experience enhancing their physicality with the men’s second team, and developing tactically with good intensity with the U23s. It surely won’t be long before we see more of them stepping up for their next challenge with first team.
A huge achievement for the team—congratulations to all involved!
